Are You Placing Your GPS Tracker Properly?

GPS tracker: Placement does matter!

If you’ve decided that GPS tracker devices were the greatest way to optimize your fleet tracking abilities, but you’ve been having some problems with installation then today’s post might be just for you! Simply put, some devices are easier to self-install than others. Today, we’re going to talk about some common devices and give quick tips on how to best place the mentioned GPS tracker devices for improved usage.

1.) With the OBD-V3 device, you probably have one of the easiest GPS tracker devices to install. If your vehicles are cars or light trucks with a model year 1996 or after then they are OBD II compliant. So, simply look at the OBD-V3 connector and locate your truck’s OBD II port that matches. The connector should be located within three feet of the driver and should not require any tools to be revealed. Look under the dash and behind ashtrays. Then plug in the device! It’s that simple.

2.) With devices such as the PT-V3 Pro you have to take a totally different approach. First, make certain that the GPS tracker unit is sitting correctly inside the box. If you get into too much of a hurry, you could accidentally place the unit upside down and find yourself having connection issues. Next, avoid placing the device somewhere that metal will be covering it up. This will interfere with your signal. DO place the device as close to the rear of the vehicle as possible, making use of the powerful magnetic box. Clip it on and get ready to go!

3.) The AT-V3, AT-V3 Pro and NT-V3 GPS tracker devices will, generally, use the basic system set-up in which placing the unit behind the instrument cluster (or highest point of dash) facing up will work. From there you simply drop the wires down to make up connections with the coordinating wires under the dash. Units with an antenna separate, like the NT-V3, will require that the installer pays close attention to the placement of antennae. One side is marked “this side up,” because if it it flipped incorrectly it will interfere with your signal. You can place this antenna under plastic and it should not cause any signal problems as long as it is facing upwards in the correct direction.

Today, we’re going to talk about which view works best for the size of the reports you may be trying to pull up.

View Online: This option is best used for smaller reports. Depending on how busy your fleet drivers are in one day may determine how much data can be swiftly pulled up online without affecting the performance of your computer. For example, it’s highly possible for one vehicle to generate 25 pages of content on a daily standard report. This can, generally, pull up pretty quickly. If you’re doing this for an entire fleet and you have notice a lag in your system, it may be best to chose the next option.

Request Download: This option is best chosen when you think or know that the report you are about to pull is going to be large. With GPS tracker reports you have the option to pull data back to the last 90 days. These reports, especially for the whole fleet, would be best downloaded rather than viewed online. The benefit to downloading versus viewing online is that it is easier to save the spreadsheet of information and print it off later if needed.

With all reports the user has the option to pull data for an individual device or device group. This is the difference between choosing data for one vehicle at a time or, possibly, for the entire fleet. You may chose either with the “View Online” or the “Request Download” option with either as previously mentioned, depending on the size of the report. Managers also need to be able to find their vehicles quickly on a live map. We’re going to go over a few reasons why this feature is so awesome.

1.) Finding Devices Quickly: In the lower left corner of your map screen you can search anything and it only takes seconds for data to generate based on your search. For example, let’s say managers need to find a specific driver or device on the map. All the manager needs to do is type in the name of said device and data will automatically pop up to show the vehicle icon related to that device. In a matter of seconds the device is found on the live map.

2.) Finding Places Easily: If a driver is out in the field and needs to have the vehicle serviced for repairs, the driver can use the search bar to locate a nearby maintenance shop. The data is pulled from Google immediately. Those shops that have store hours posted on Google will appear on the GPS tracker map as green dots. Closed shops will appear as red dots and gray dots are displayed when store hours are unknown. Yellow dots represent stores that are open now, but closing soon. The dots turn blue when you hover over them to make it easy to see which location you are looking at. Most of the locations include website links, phone numbers and addresses to make it easier for drivers.

You could use the individual control buttons if you want to get more specific about certain activities within the GPS tracker, but if you want quick data right away the search feature is the perfect feature for this. To avoid wasting time and using up fuel by driving around to places that may be further way, just use the search feature to get your drivers closer to a more suitable destination.
